“The Red Chair” was established on a Saturday afternoon November 1997 in the basement of a bar on the Southside of Five Points in Birmingham. For nearly two years prior to its establishment, Mistress Dominique and Grant burned a trail down I-20 to Atlanta as often as they could in search of their kinky kindred to the East. Over the years, they met wonderful people and they absorbed all they could learn, experience, and feel from them. In Atlanta, they partied in “The Chamber” a nightclub pulsing with techno music and filled with eye candy for the gothic and fetish-a-go-go crowd. Often, they were welcomed into the private lairs of their fellow BDSMers. They were members of “The Sanctuary of a Dark Angel” the crown jewel of the South’s Kinky Mecca ran by Grand Master Doug and “P.E.P” -the largest public dungeon in the region. Serving Central Alabama’s BDSM Alternative Lifestyle Community The Red Chair (TRC for short) is Alabama’s oldest organization dedicated to meeting the needs of those who choose alternative lifestyles. We do this through education, service, networking and advocacy, with regular meetings, events and classes. This provides a safe setting within which individuals can meet and learn from one another. We are proud to be a Coalition Partner of the National Coalition of Sexual Freedom (NCSF). New members are encouraged to start by attending munches, which are usually held two evenings each month. We look forward to meeting you. “We are a group dedicated to providing education and support for adults that practice alternative lifestyles, particularly the BDSM lifestyle. We provide this via educational seminars, lectures, group discussions, and free form meetings. We welcome all sexual orientation, consensual relationships, and safe/sane/consensual BDSM practices without discrimination.” Membership in The Red Chair is by invitation. You must be at least 19 years old, and have met with someone in leadership at least twice in person to join. This means that we need to meet you at least twice and get to know you a bit before we invite you to participate in our various events. The usual way to do this is by attending a few munches, which are normally held every other Wednesday in Birmingham. You can see dates and locations for these on our calendar. This screening process helps us protect the confidentiality of our members, while ensuring that prospective members understand the nature of TRC. Finally, we have reciprocal agreements with similar groups in the region, and members of those are allowed to join TRC with no additional requirements. In addition, we follow a “common sense” policy regarding those who are well known by individuals who are well established in trusted in our community. For other situations, fill out the contact form, and we’ll let you know what policies apply. A munch is a gathering of kinky people socializing in an everyday “vanilla” setting. It’s a great way for people interested in kink to meet people in a low-pressure place, so they can stick their toes in the waters of the local community. We have guided discussions on topics related to kink— though you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. These are open to anyone 19 years or older, and are totally free. We ask that people dress “vanilla friendly.” If you wouldn’t wear it to a bar on Friday night, please don’t wear it to a munch. Welcome to The Red Chair
